Try Lauren Pomerantz's "Wings of Time". Absolutely lovely
interpretations of Sephardic songs, with excellent instrumental work
by some of the best medieval performers today (in my humble opinion!).
You might also be interested in Ensemble Alcatraz's "Visions and
Miracles", which contains Cantigas de Santa Maria, and music from the
Las Huelgas Codex. The instrumentalists are the same on both
recordings.

Quoth T. Benedetti:

"Can anyone provide some titles of available CDs and tapes of early music of
Iberia, esp. sephardic and mozarabic chant."

Here is a highly recommended book + CD package, just out in France:

Christian Poche', "La Musique Arabo-Andalouse." Published by Cite' de la
musique/Actes Sud. Costs 85 francs (about $17). The text is fair-to-good (I
came across some dubious assertions), but the CD is fantastic -- an archive
of early 78 rpm recordings from north Africa in the so-called Arab-Andalusian
style. Several are by Jewish musicians. All in Arabic except for one
astonishing piece in Spanish -- A la una nasse yo -- by a certain Haim
Effendi, singing with oud and kanun accompaniment. The Real Stuff. Puts all
our E.M. attempts at re-creation into humbling perspective.

Lauren Pomerantz actually has two recordings available: _Wings of Time_
and _Jewels of the Sephardim_ (I think). _Wings_ is the most recent.
The other is her first album from a decade or so ago. Both are very
nice. According to the liner notes (which I read a while ago, so don't
hold me to this) she actually lived and studied with Sephardic peoples in
Spain for a time, so she brings the living tradition to bear on the
period music. I don't know enough about the literature to know if it is
all appropriate, but she makes good music.

There is also a two disc set of Spanish Jewish and Sephardic music by
Hesperion XX on Angel/EMI. If it isn't an import, it should be readily
available; however, if it is an Angel import, you have to take your
chances trying to find it on the shelf. (Angel Imports only solicits
U.S. buyers once or twice per year.)

As to where you can obtain these recordings by mail order, there are a
couple of options of which I am aware: "An Die Muzik" in Baltimore (I used
to work there, and they had this stuff when I was there last Christmas)
whose number is (410)296-8742; if that doesn't work you can try "Tower
Records" (you will pay a little more, but they will probably have the
stuff) - their (800)# is in the inside front cover of the Schwann Opus
catalogue; the only other possibility I know of is "The Musical Offering"
(I don't know if they do mail order, but they post on this group
frequently) - their # is (800)478-MUSIC and their email address is
<mus...@ix.netcom.com>. Happy hunting.

Surely not in Spain, whence they were expelled in 1492. It was
Mallorca, I believe.
